US : DIY market worth nearly £8bn in 2006
DIY Superstores have found growth in whole room solutions, according to GfK Marketing Services
GfK has revealed that the total DIY market declined by 1.9 per cent in value in 2006, compared to a 3 per cent decrease in 2005. The rate of decline in 2006 has been much slower than for 2005, with the worst 12 month period for growth being between July 2005 - June 2006.
DIY superstores have found that providing whole room solutions for consumers is a real growth area. This market has increased by nearly 5 per cent between 2005 - 2006 and is now worth over £1.5bn.
Highlighted areas are:
• Living and Dining Room: Up 13% to £165 million (£146 million in 2005)
• Kitchens: Up 7% to £737 million (£689 million in 2005)
• Home Office: Up 41% to £24 million (£17 million in 2005)
• Bathroom Shower: Down 4% to £499 million
(£520 million in 2005)
• Bedrooms: Down 13% to £165 million (£112 million in 2005)
Daniel Fearnley, Account Director of GfK Marketing Services said: “The move towards room solutions and added value products means that superstores can continue to provide customers with traditional DIY items, while generating new sales opportunities. While it's true that the DIY market has declined through 2006 the rate of decline has slowed remarkably, proving that we have not yet seen the 'Death of DIY'”
