According to reports in the Indian press, Metro has already signed up around 80,000 members for its fourth cash & carry outlet in the country, expected to open in Kolkata in June to July this year. At the same time, Metro has lined up an EUR150,000 (USD197,959) programme to train fishermen and sheep farmers in the state to supply its distribution centres. Manish Bhargava, head of corporate communications, said Metro would set up its fish handling centre at the Frasergunj harbour initially, followed by similar facilities at four or five other landing places for marine catch. In this move, the retailer is looking for a collaboration with the government and some non-governmental organisation, mostly for the human resources angle. "We will also do something for inland water fish," he said.
